Saint Jerome
I was born in what is now called Croatia. I was tutored at home and developed a love for education. Later, I went to Rome to study Greek and Latin. There I received Baptism and felt God’s call to serve the Church. I was ordained a priest and lived my vocation studying rather than serving people in a parish. Then I moved to the wilderness to find the necessary silence for my studies. I studied Hebrew together with the texts of the Bible, wrote books and many texts explaining the faith. I was called by Pope Damasus to become papal secretary. It became my duty to translate the Bible into Latin because that was the common tongue of the people. My translation of the Bible is called the Vulgate. Later in my life I travelled to the Holy Land. In Jerusalem, I built a monastery. I died in 420.
