Saint John Nepomuk
I was born in what is now the Czech Republic, in 1345. I studied in Italy and became a doctor of canon law. I had many posts in the church, and was a regular at the king's court. I became the Vicar-General of the archbishop of Prague. Among others, I was the confessor of the Queen. With my support, the archbishop cast out one of the favourites of the king of Bohemia and prevented the king's appointment of a new bishop. I was arrested, but it is not clear what was the reason. It can be that the king was unhappy to be blocked in his scheme to appoint a new bishop. But the people of Prague said that it was because I refused to reveal to the king what hte queen had confessed. Whatever the reason, I was tortured, after which I was thrown into the Vltava River. Thus I became a martyr of the faith.
