Saint John XXIII
I was born in Italy as Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. At a young age, my parents understood that I was not like my siblings. They arranged for me to be tutored by the local priest, that prepared my path towards the future. I was ordained a priest in 1904. During World War I, I served as a doctor and chaplain. During World War II, I held the office of a papal diplomat, and helped thousands of refugees in Europe. In 1958, I was elected pope, taking the name John. After four years, I called together all bishops of the world in a large church gathering, which became known as the Second Vatican Council. Together with the bishops, we discussed and tried to understand better the role of the Church in society. I appealed to the bishops to follow a path of mercy. Besides that, I promoted relations with other Christian churches. I died in 1963, 81 years old.
