Saint Moses the Ethiopian
I was the slave of a servant of a government official in Egypt, but was dismissed for theft and suspect murder. I became the leader of a gang of bandits. Soon, we had many a robbery, raid, and murder on our slate. When the government troops persecuting us got too near, I found shelter with some monks in the desert. This hiding place had a totally unexpected effect on me. The monks' dedication of their lives to God, their inner peace and commitment made me think. As a result, I gave up my old way of life and became a Christian. At first, I had a difficult time adjusting to monastic life. Many a time, I proved a challenge for my fellow monks. When I was about 75 years old, the monastery was attacked by bandits. I sent most of my brothers away, and stayed behind. I died without raising a finger against my attackers.
