Biography

I was born in 1897 as Giovanni Battisti Montini. As a child, I was sick most of the time, so I did not do as many things as the other children. However, I very much liked to read. After finishing high school, I decided to follow the path towards priesthood. Over the years, I held ever more important positions in the Church. In 1953, I was appointed Archbishop of Milan, and was created a Cardinal. I fought for workers’ rights and strove to improve the relationship between the Christian churches. In 1963, I became Pope, and took the name Paul. I wanted to continue the work begun by Pope John XXIII. I travelled throughout the world, along with others to the Holy Land and met with representatives of the Eastern Orthodox Church. I died in 1978.
