Saint Thomas Becket
I was born in 1119 in London, England. I became a city clerk and accountant in the service of the sheriffs. I was introduced by my father to archbishop Theobald, whose confidence I gained. After my education, I was promoted archdeacon of Canterbury by archbishop Theobald himself. However, I led a very worldly life with no true interest in religion. After a year, King Henry II made me chancellor of England. Now I had a political and religious duty at the same time. In 1162, I was ordained Archbishop of Canterbury. King Henry thought I would support his views at all times. But something changed in me, and I made it clear to him that I could not accept his intrusions into Church affairs. This eventually led to my death. I was killed by the king’s knights in Canterbury Cathedral.
