Blessed Joan of Portugal
I was born in Lisbon on 6 February 1452 as the daughter of Afonso V of Portugal and his wife Isabel of Coimbra. After the death of my older brother, I was recognized as heir presumptive and given the title of Princess of Portugal. Although I had another brother, I kept the title. I expressed a desire to become a nun, but I my father did not allow this at first, since I was second-in-line to the throne. During a military expedition of my father, I served as regent. I refused all marriage proposals and eventually joined the Dominican Convent of Jesus in Aveiro in 1475. But I was obliged to return to court at several occasions. I even got some eminent marriage proposals from Charles VIII of France and Richard III of England, but I turned them down as I want to live for God alone. I continued to support my brother as King throughout his reign and I died on 12 May 1490.
