Saint Cunigunde of Luxembourg
I was born around 975 as a daughter of Siegfried I of Luxembourg and Hedwig of Nordgau. I married King Henry II of Germany. Our marriage was mainly of a spiritual nature. Some years later, Henry was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and I was crowned as his Queen. I was politically active. As the closest adviser of my husband, I took part in councils and decisions. When I suffered from a grave illness, Henry and I vowed that we would found a monastery if I would regain my health. Upon the death of my husband, I became Empress. After a year, I abdicated, and entered the monastery of Benedictine nuns, which we had founded. I performed charitable works, cared for the sick and devoted my time to prayer. I died in 1040 and was buried beside my husband.
