Saint Hildegard of Bingen
I was born in Germany. At a young age, I had a holy teacher named Jutta, abbess of a great abbey. I learned from her to love God and to pray. I became a nun when I was 15 years old. I spent my time very close to God, praying every day. At the age of 42, I was chosen to succeed my holy teacher Jutta as abbess. I loved to tell others of the beauty of nature and the importance of prayer. Sometimes, I had visions of Jesus and saints. I was also a talented writer of many books and poems. I wrote plays and composed songs about God’s Glory. In this way, I spread his word. In spite of my poor health, I went on several preaching tours through Germany. I exchanged letters with Popes and other great leaders. Due to my wisdom, people came to me for advice. I died in 1179.
