Saint Philip Neri
I was born in 1515 in Italy. My family wanted me to become a successful businessman. I was trained by my uncle in this sense, but gradually I discovered I wanted to follow a different path. I went to Rome to study. During this time, I tutored young children, visited the churches and the catacombs. I wanted to spend my life for God alone, working with those who needed my attention most. I began to work among the poor and the sick in Rome. First I was a layman, but then I discovered my vocation to the priesthood. After my ordination, I spoke with different people and convinced them to join me. Together, we founded the Oratory, a community of men who gathered with God to pray, sing and discuss the faith. Many people came to seek my advice, including many future saints. I always kept my sense of humour and cordial attitude towards others. I died in 1595, leaving the Church a lasting legacy through my example of total surrender in the hands of God.
